Storytellers Special Interest Group - 23 Mar 2024

CAGGNI's Storytellers group works on developing and polishing their family history writing. Specific writing prompts are announced a few weeks prior to each session. Alternatively, you may wish to share something else you’ve been working on. Please bring two copies for sharing.

    SIG Lead: Marti Swanson

March Writing topic: The suggested topic for our March gathering is a relative you didn't meet until later in life. Set the scene: Did you have any pre-conceived notions about this relative? How did you (finally) meet this relative. Were you eager to meet him/her? How did the meeting come about? What was your first impression of this relative? Are you glad you had the opportunity to meet this relative? Tell about your time together.

As always, if you'd prefer a different topic, you're welcome to bring something else to share with the group. I hope we'll have a wonderful group for our fourth Saturday in March get-together at 10:00 at the rear of the main floor of the Schaumburg Library. Please bring two copies of your story for sharing. I'm hoping to many of you at our gathering!

CAGGNI SIGs are for members only.

Meeting Style: The Storytellers SIG is a live-only offering. We meet in the Commons area at STDL on the main floor.

Why is Jewish Research Different from All Other Research?

    by Suzanne Hoffman

A play on the Four Questions of the Passover Seder, we'll explore why Jewish research is so difficult. What historical and ethnic facts hinder us from linking to the past? Where can we look for the ties that bind? Whether you have 1 Jewish relative or 400, the historical impediments to research make collaborative research a must. We will look at a wide variety of obstacles and the promise of solutions to solving our family mysteries.

After 25 years of research, Suzanne Hoffman still finds her Illinois-born husband's pioneer line a great deal easier to pursue than her mainly Lithuanian and Russian conquest of missing and unreadable documents. She's a graduate of the University of Chicago - Executive Management Program and Smith College, with a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University. She volunteers at the Wilmette FamilySearch Center, is the Vice President of the Association of Professional Genealogists, and the current secretary of the Illinois State Genealogical Society.

    Bounty Land: Colonial to 1855

    by Craig Scott

From King Philip's War until 1855, bounty land was the expectation of any soldier who served, and during some periods, if he did not survive, his expectation was that his heirs would qualify. Records were created by colonial, state, and the federal government as bounty land was distributed, creating buffers and populating the areas on the frontier and elsewhere where land was available.

Craig Roberts Scott, MA, CG, FUGA, is the President and CEO of Heritage Books, Inc., a genealogical publishing firm with over 9,500 titles in print. A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than 35 years, he specializes in records of the National Archives, especially those that relate to the military. He has coordinated the military tracks at IGHR, SLIG, and GRIP in years past. He is currently the Coordinator of the SLIG Consultation Track, helping students solve their brick wall problems.

The Jones Family: A Chicago Irish Story

    by Maureen Brady

Chicago area family history research can be a challenge due to historical events and the physical size of the area and population. Using a case study of a Chicago Irish family that fled the Great Famine and settled in pre-Fire Chicago, this presentation will demonstrate strategies for tackling the challenges of Chicago area research and review record availability, repositories and online resources.

Maureen Brady has forty years experience with family history research, pursuing her Chicago, the trans-Allegheny U.S., Scottish, Quebecois, Irish and Swedish ancestors. Maureen has made numerous presentations to genealogical societies, libraries, conferences and workshops throughout the U.S., including presenting webinars for the Brigham Young University Library. In addition to various genealogical societies, Maureen is a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild and a life member of the Chicago Genealogical Society.

    About the DNA SIG

This group focuses on learning the methods for analyzing DNA test results. We study topics such as autosomal DNA, mitochondrial DNA, Y-DNA and surname projects, X-DNA and ancestral admixture results. We'll also investigate third-party tools for analyzing your raw data and comparing DNA and gedcom data with test kit results from companies besides the one you tested with.

DNA can break down genealogical brick walls once thought impenetrable – but only if you know how.

This SIG endeavors to be interactive and welcomes your questions. Get ready to put your DNA results to work for you!

    SIG Lead: Michelle Wilson

Future Topics: If you have a topic you would like to present or see presented, please reach out to Michelle at DNA @ caggni.org.

Meeting Style: This SIG is typically hybrid. For this session, you may attend the lecture portion (first hour) remote or in-person at TBA. Note that the Workshop, which will begin about 1 pm, is Live-Only at TBA location.

Safeguarding Your Family History for Now and the Future: Considerations and Techniques for Backing Up Your Research

    by Eric Vavra

Genealogists invest significant time, money, and passionate effort into the pursuit of connecting with their family history. However, enough focus is frequently not given to protecting their physical and digital files, precious artifacts, and research conclusions. Unfortunately, this too often results in the potential destruction of materials forever or ineffective attempts to reconstruct years of lost work. We will review methods to identify and mitigate risks to preserve your findings and enable a genealogical legacy.

Eric Vavra has combined his experience in Information Technology and interest in solving the mysteries of his family history to become an avid Genealogist. He combines traditional research approaches with technology to discover and explore his roots. His educational background and professional career as a global delivery consultant provide him with a uniquely diverse set of skills useful for genealogy. He strives to share his knowledge to assist others in their journey as Genealogists.
