DNA Special Interest Group - 15 Oct 2022

Today's Topic: Seven Year Case Study: Resolved!

(Due to the sensitivity of the topic, this will be in-person at the Schaumburg library only)

Michelle has spoken about the search for Doug Dion's bio-parents, first at  GeneaQuest 2014 and later at Lake County Genealogy Society's 2017 conference. Just this year the paternal side of the case has been solved. This talk will show how the paternal side was finally solved and tie up the loose ends of some of the early matches.

We will discuss how all four of the four of the major companies (Family Tree DNA, My Heritage, Ancestry, and 23 and Me) were essential to solving the case, and how autosomal, X-DNA, and mitochondrial DNA were all deployed. We will also resolve the connections from a few of the early, distant matches, including the X-match between Doug and Michelle's Dad, that can be discerned now that the lines of ascent are known. You will be able to put these tools to work solving your own cases!

About the DNA SIG

This group focuses on learning the methods for analyzing DNA test results. We study topics such as autosomal DNA, mitochondrial DNA, Y-DNA and surname projects, X-DNA and ancestral admixture results. We'll also investigate third-party tools for analyzing your raw data and comparing DNA and gedcom data with test kit results from companies besides the one you tested with.

DNA can break down genealogical brick walls once thought impenetrable – but only if you know how.

This SIG endeavors to be interactive and welcomes your questions. Get ready to put your DNA results to work for you!
