Post Office Records, Geography, Politics, Religion, and More

by Diane L. Richard

Most post office talks focus on the U.S. Post Office as employers. But post offices aren’t just about employees or even the mail. Post offices defined communities, and people used their existence to locate themselves. Records also document magazine and newspaper subscriptions received, often organized by customers! We can gain a personal perspective on our ancestors while learning the reading habits of the larger community. Priceless!

About Diane L. Richard

Diane L. Richard provides professional genealogical services including research, lectures, and writing. She is a longtime editor of the North Carolina Genealogical Society journal. Diane has written more than 500 articles and delivered numerous talks about the availability and richness of under-utilized genealogically relevant records (such as the post office records) while providing research tips, techniques, tools, and strategies. Diane currently serves as co-leader of the Tar Heel Discoveries and is a board member of the North Carolina Historical Records Online (NCHRO).

Presentation Style: Remote Hybrid. Ms. Richard will be joining us remotely via Zoom from North Carolina. If you live in the Northern Illinois area, we will be booking the library, and encourage you to join us for the best experience.

Members, Please Note. This meeting will be followed by CAGGNI's Colonial SIG, which will focus on finding and using postal records. Please come with suggestions for towns / locations with which to search for the postal records you are seeking.
